Robert Shafto, Executive Director, bshafto@mainecenter.org

A former high school science teacher and K-12 environmental education coordinator in Calais, Bob founded the Center in 1975. An innovator at heart, he has overseen the growth of the Center from a single project to a highly regarded, multi-faceted school improvement organization.

 

Mary Jane McCalmon, Associate Executive Director, mjmccalmon@mainecenter.org

Mary Jane brings 30 years of education experience to her work with Center clients. Most recently, Mary Jane provided leadership as superintendent of schools in Portland and Oxford Hills. In addition to sharing management responsibilities at the Center, Mary Jane provides organizational development services to clients throughout the state of Maine. She has participated in both National Training Lab and Gestalt Institute training. Mary Jane says she especially enjoys "helping clients do quality work to move their organizations forward."

Dick Babb, Organizational Development Services, dbabb@mainecenter.org

Dick has worked in public school education for 33 years and in the field of organizational development for the past 12 years. At the Center, Dick works with clients to help them create dynamic workplaces characterized by a positive climate, high levels of trust and communication, good planning and shared leadership. He offers team building, leadership development, conflict management and strategic visioning/planning expertise.

Jenifer Van Deusen, SEED Director, jvandeusen@mainecenter.org

As the head gardener of SEED, Jenifer brings 25 years of education work to the Center, 15 as an educational consultant. She has nurtured SEED to achieve its status as a showcase program. Under Jenifer's artful gardening skill, SEED has received Program of the Year from the Maine Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development, the SBC National Telecommunication Partnership Award from the National Partners in Education and has been listed as one of the "50 State and Local Programs" from civic.com.

Mike Nolette, SEED Technology Facilitator, mnolette@mainecenter.org

Mike brings 10 years experience as a teacher at Mount Valley High School in Rumford to the Center, where he works to "make sure that technology doesn't get in the way of people accomplishing their goals."

 

Karen Ouellette, SEED Administrative Assistant, kouellette@mainecenter.org

Karen provides administrative support for SEED and its staff, including assisting with Technology Learning Leaders, Developer and Adaptor projects.

Sue Card, STAR Director, scard@mainecenter.org

Sue, with 30 years of work in the field of education, works with STAR to transform teaching and learning through the use of data. She is energized by "structuring professional development activities that create an environment that encourages risk-taking."

 

Heidi McGinley, STAR Program Consultant, hmcginley@mainecenter.org

Heidi has worked in education since 1977, including a decade with the Maine Department of Education, in the areas of assessment, organizational development, standards and technology. Heidi helps schools use assessment data to construct systems. "I love the chance to develop new, supportive products and services that meet real needs," says Heidi of her work.

 

Brian Albert, STAR Operations Manager, balbert@mainecenter.org

Brian brings 25 years of public education experience to STAR and the Center. Brian began his public education career as an elementary teacher and retired after 19 years as building principal. Brian manages the flow of STAR work, and especially likes "connecting with schools by working with teachers, administrators and curriculum folks."

Jessica Kelly, DiscoverME Education Specialist, jkelly@mainecenter.org

Jessica, a former Scarborough middle-school teacher, is a graduate of the University of Southern Maine's American and New England Studies program and Extended Teacher Education Program. She believes in the need to create powerful, new resources for Maine-studies teachers statewide.

 

Frank Callanan, Technology Specialist, fcallanan@mainecenter.org

A Colby College grad and former Spanish teacher, Frank was a technology coordinator for 15 years, most recently in Camden/Rockport. Frank is passionate about the power of technology as a tool for teaching and learning, and for streamlining district management and communication. He leads the development of our DiscoverME initiative.

Betsy Caswell, Business Manager, bcaswell@mainecenter.org

Betsy has worked for the center for 17 years, and manages all aspects of the financial operations of the organization. To Betsy, the Center "feels like home."

 

Julie St. Hilaire, Office Manager, jsthilaire@mainecenter.org

Julie has worked at the Center since 1993, and is currently DiscoverME's operations manager. In that role, she handles all the details regarding each cycle, including registration and tech support.

Jane P. Lord, Communications Coordinator, jlord@mainecenter.org

Jane manages the Center's public relations and communications needs. After spending many years as a newspaper editor, she now heads her own public relations firm in Portland.
